· Savouring –› recommended as one of the most powerful positive techniques. Definition: tuning into, appreciating and enhancing the positive experiences in your life (Bryant & Veroff, 2007). Extracting maximum enjoyment. Usually to enjoy the taste, but we expand it to enjoy anything, getting the full flavour of positive experience:
- The beauty of nature – the landscape, mountains, trees, sunrise and sunset, the night sky…
- Time spent with loved ones, warmth and support of friendships, delight and innocence of young children, the wisdom of elders, kindness of strangers.
- A great book, a good film, an uplifting concert, an inspiring piece of art or well-executed design
- Simple pleasures such as a hug, a laugh, fresh bedlinen or a nice warm bath
- Personal achievements, celebrations, special occasion such as birthdays, graduation, weddings, anniversaries…
You can savour present moment and also past enjoyable, happy, calming moments.
· Helps overcoming the negativity bias. Some ppl are more visual, others auditory, smell, touch, tastes.
·Notes:
-small frequent doses. Stretch the experience, engage your full attention, use all your senses, reflect on the source of the enjoyment
- you might need shorter or longer times to "tune in" with that expereince depending on how "empty" your batteries are. If you experienced a lot of negative emotions (longer term or higher doses) you might need longer. BE KIND and PATIENT with yourself.
(basking – in an accomplishment, recognition, admiration.. , luxuriating – delighting in physical pleasures, enjoying bodily sensations – a warm bath.. marvelling, thanksgiving (Akhtar, …)
